What to establish first
- A requested file type comes first, ahead of any general format advice.
- A text-based PDF keeps a fixed look, but you still need to test that the text pulls out cleanly.
- A DOCX stays editable and an employer may ask for it, though it can look different from one program to another.
- ResuPulse accepts PDF only, so its parser cannot check a DOCX directly.
Reproducible test
Compare two exports without changing the words
Make both files from the same editable source, and do not edit the wording between exports.
- 1Save one clean DOCX and export one text-based PDF from the same source document.
- 2For the PDF, run the ResuPulse Resume Parser Test and save the text it pulls out.
- 3For the DOCX, use the employer preview when there is one, or open it in the program the recipient named and copy all the text into a plain-text editor.
- 4Compare the headings, dates, bullets, special characters, and section order.
- 5Send the file type they ask for; if they do not ask for one, send the checked export that keeps your content intact.
Pass condition
The required file type opens correctly and keeps all the key text in a sensible order.
Fail condition for this test
The file is not supported, opens with a changed structure, or loses key text in the check.
Pass/fail example
Example: the format changes, the content should not
The sample below is illustrative. It demonstrates what to compare; it is not output from an employer system.

The plain text you expect from either checked export

Bullet styling may change in plain text, but the heading, title, employer, dates, and achievement should stay complete and in order. The file extension on its own does not prove that.
Follow a simple order, not a one-size rule
First, do what the posting or upload box tells you. If it asks for DOCX, send DOCX. If it asks for PDF, send PDF. If it accepts several types with no preference, check the file you plan to send instead of assuming the extension makes it safe.
Keep the original editable document. Turning a PDF back into a DOCX can add line breaks, floating pieces, and spacing changes that were not in the source.
What each format is good for
A PDF locks the page appearance, which makes it handy for checking the exact document a person will see. It can still be image-only or have a reading order that is hard to follow.
A DOCX shows its structure to word-processing software and is sometimes what an employer asks for. Fonts, spacing, fields, and floating objects can look different from one program to another, so open the final file in a matching viewer before you send it.
What ResuPulse can test
The ResuPulse Resume Parser Test accepts text-based PDFs up to 5MB. It does not accept DOCX, so it cannot line up a direct PDF-versus-DOCX comparison for an employer system.
Use its output to check your PDF. For a DOCX, lean on the recipient instructions, any preview the application shows, and a careful review in matching software.
Limitations of this guidance
These boundaries matter when interpreting the controlled test.
- No file type is guaranteed to behave the same in every employer system.
- ResuPulse tests PDF text only and cannot review a DOCX upload.
- Copying DOCX content into a text editor is a helpful check, not a stand-in for an employer parser.
- A file that reads cleanly can still hold weak, off-topic, or unsupported claims.
Frequently asked questions
Should I ignore a DOCX request because a PDF keeps its formatting?
No. Follow the employer request. A fixed look does not help if the application expects another supported format.
Is every PDF text-based?
No. A scan or screenshot saved as a PDF can hold only images. Check that the text is selectable and look at the text the parser pulls out.
Can I rename a file extension to convert it?
No. Renaming .pdf to .docx or the other way around does not change the document inside. Export a new file from the editable source.
